‘OUT OF PLACE’ EXHIBIT

LINK TO EXHIBIT VIDEO

Out Of Place was a group show curated by Naji AlAli with the help from his friend and mentor “Cheeks”, creating an interactive space with a select number of local artists.

This immersive experience was inspired by feeling out of place in certain social spaces, feeling alienated, or wanting to step out of the comfort zone in order to stand out; the exhibit was done that way, breaking the boundaries of art gallery expectations.

Everyone showing work was encouraged to go big in the space, build and paint everything, and the mix of styles transitioned beautifully around the exhibit. Leaving a unique identity of each artist in every corner of the gallery.

Artist bio by Curator Jamila Brown

Self-taught and inspired to be an artist since childhood, Naji Al-Ali's practice came to fruition seamlessly. Al-Ali observes that his work "started off as painting and developed into meaning." Parallel to the idea of borderlessness, seen for example in Free Birds, Al-Ali recalls traveling often as a child and "never feeling like I had just one home." This nomad-like freedom fed his creativity while allowing him to forge new ideas of place and belonging in various pockets of the world. Being born in Dubai, growing up in Qatar, and taking annual summer trips to Egypt and Jordan, Al-Ali expresses his need to "create my own home." Though he has yet to step foot on his homeland of Palestine, Al-Ali feels a deep connection to his lineage and roots there. The city of Charlotte also plays a sacred role in his creative life, being the birthplace of his signature Lemonback character, described as "the abstract reflection of the world that we live in." In addition to Lemonback, which also touches on the lemonback species of pythons, Al-Ali pairs his Free Birds with snake imagery as a symbolic reminder of continual evolution and being grounded on Earth.

Naji AI-Ali developed an affinity for art early on and was inspired by the work of a politically critical Palestinian cartoonist who is his namesake. He is also influenced by his travels, present surroundings, and heritage. As an artist, Al-Ali thoughtfully conceives of new worlds and employs symbolism imbued by his own sense of belonging, identity, and faith. Akin to the wind's guidance of birds as they fly, he lives and works navigated by an intuitive and spiritual source, expressing it as the "Universe telling me how to maneuver." Through the daintiest of details, seen for example by his working in threes throughout this series, Al-Ali creatively connects to his Islamic-based spirituality and larger purpose. Meticulously attuned to the minute elements of each composition, Naji Al-Ali aims to create space for each viewer to dive deeper into their own worlds by working in a manner of simplicity that stokes thought and distinct resonance.ing me how to maneuver." EXIT WEST - Q0DE GALLERY (2024)

This body of work delves into the impacts and intricate narratives surrounding migration, displacement, and diasporic communities, particularly from Palestine and the Arab world. Through meticulously crafted paintings, Atallah and AlAli explore these themes with a focus on layering and depth, drawing inspiration from cultural and sacred symbols.

The artworks feature layered portraiture against complex backgrounds that are rich in subtlety and symbolism. Atallah incorporates elements such as Arabic calligraphy, specifically square kufic calligraphy, painted mosaic patterns, and sacred geometrical motifs, paying homage to the diverse and vibrant artistic traditions of the Arab world. AlAli incorporates symbolic elements such as animals and sacred motifs, transcending geographic boundaries to connect his diasporic communities with Palestine.

Central to the exhibition are the carefully layered paintings, which offer an in-depth engagement with the artists’ diasporic communities and imaginaries.

Through these portraits, Atallah and AlAli aim to capture the vivid nuances and multifaceted dimensions of contemporary life, transcending the often simplistic narratives of war, conflict and tragedy that dominate mainstream discourse.

While the artworks subtly reference the impact of conflict and forced displacement, they also celebrate resilience and the enduring humanity of the people portrayed.

Each painting serves as a testament to the resilience and strength of everyday people, resisting passive observation and offering a dynamic representation that honors their individuality and dignity.

Overall, this body of work serves as an homage to the lived experiences of diasporic communities, inviting the viewers to engage deeply with the stories and identities that shape our interconnected world.
